What Experience Produces the Best Cybersecurity Talent?

Jul 21, 2020Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity jobs have been on the rise, even before the pandemic. The 2019/2020 Official Annual Cybersecurity Jobs Report predicts there will be 3.5 million unfilled cybersecurity jobs by 2021. That represents a growth of 350 percent from 2013, showing the clear need to start finding the best cybersecurity talent as soon as possible. With this many jobs coming available, cybersecurity talent will have plenty of options.

The best cybersecurity talent share some common traits, experiences, and skills. When you are looking for someone to fill your own cybersecurity role, watch for talent with cybersecurity certifications, experience, and soft skills to ensure they have what it takes.

Cybersecurity Certifications

Certifications are an important consideration for any cybersecurity talent. One study found that 35 percent of cybersecurity jobs require industry certification. That is compared to the 23 percent of IT jobs overall that call for certification.

Each job will call for its own set of certifications. Here are some of the more popular cybersecurity certifications proving professionals have the skills and knowledge for the job:

  • Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP) — CISSP covers non-vendor-specific cybersecurity knowledge, and is one of the top-ranking designations a cybersecurity pro can obtain.
  • Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) — This certification shows that holders can think like a hacker, in an ethical way. They understand hacking technologies, vulnerabilities, and information security laws and standards.
  • CompTIA Security+ — Made for new cybersecurity professionals, this is a general certification showing the holder understands broad IT security concepts. This certification is mandated for all US Department of Defense employees.

There are also non-security IT certifications that can help, especially for those just breaking into the cybersecurity field.  These certifications include:

  • CompTIA A+ — This certificate is fairly standard for any IT professional, showing they can maintain and service devices including PCs, mobile devices, operating systems, and printers. Thea additional Network+ certification covers every aspect of data networks.
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Routing And Switching — CCNA certificates show holders can install, configure, operate, and troubleshoot routed and switched networks.

Cybersecurity Experience

Ultimately, all of the education, training and certifications pale in comparison to real, hands-on experience. While everyone has to start somewhere, hiring talent with relevant experience is key. Those seeking entry-level jobs can often obtain much needed experience through internship opportunities and similar educational enrichment to start gaining hands-on skill. Apprenticeships, networking, and volunteer work also help.

Multiple years of experience set prospective candidates apart from those who may not have been around long enough to have what it takes. Being actively involved in cybersecurity for years ensures candidates are up to date on the latest trends, threats, and problems. Sometimes talent can obtain needed experience through accelerators and bootcamps, designed to transition professionals into the cybersecurity field. If a candidate’s resume shows this without much job experience, it may be worth looking at their resume closely for relevant certifications, skills, and talents.

General IT experience is also a key starting point for many would-be cybersecurity professionals.  Even entry-level IT jobs are a way to begin the path toward cybersecurity. Network engineers, IT techs, web developers and similar talent may be on the way to a cybersecurity role.

Qualities of a Top Cybersecurity Professional

These qualities may not be readily apparent from a resume, but can come out through meetings, interviews, and other recruiting activities. A prospect with any of these qualities can turn out to be more desirable than someone with a similar background, but different personality traits. While your own hiring should depend on the specific needs and culture of your company, consider these qualities as a starting point.

  • Attention to detail — Cybersecurity professionals need to be able to look closely at every situation, leaving nothing unturned to solve a problem. The smallest loophole could be an invitation to a devastating threat, which is why close attention is so important.
  • Communication skills — While cybersecurity professionals spend a lot of time dealing with technology, they need to be able to communicate problems and solutions to those who don’t understand the jargon.  Bob Keegan who heads up Mitchell Martin’s Cybersecurity Division, said “many of our clients are looking for candidates who have the interpersonal skills and confidence to speak with internal as well as external clients.”
  • Composure under pressure — Threats are always lurking for cybersecurity professionals. The ability to stay composed, while working urgently to solve problems, cannot be understated. A cybersecurity professional who can’t stay cool and collected will only make a tense situation worse.
  • Lifelong learning — The best cybersecurity professionals are committed to lifelong learning. Cybersecurity is not a field that stays stagnant. Mastering one skill, program, or platform is not as helpful as being willing and able to move onto the next big thing. This is also why experience is key, as it gives professionals a well-rounded approach to their career paths.
